The Exotic, The Cowardly, The Scorned is an essay written by me, which delves into the treatment of traditional Japan in western media, films and books. In the essay, I underscore the xenophobia, racism and Orientalism within different works, and I designed a book and microsite inspired by this.

Representing the “East” and the “West”, I used different scanned paper elements in a vintage blue and red, placed in contrast and in tandem in different ways. I was interested in blending the usage of physical paper in a digital format, and I think it worked really well.

Using Figma, I created a microsite version of the essay, adapting all elements for a screen, on both desktop and mobile.
